The London Clinic
2001-ongoing
The London Clinic situated on London's Harley Street is one
of the UK's longest established and largest independent hospitals.
Terry Farrell and Partners are preparing a masterplan for new buildings
and refurbishment of the London Clinic Estate. The scheme is phased
to enable an economic restructuring and expansion of the existing
facilities whilst responding to the needs of a fully operational hospital.
Sensitive issues concerning the conservation area and residential
properties that adjoin the sites are also key considerations.
The first phase of this extensive redevelopment is underway with the
refurbishment of 3-5 Devonshire Place, which will house a new Consulting
and Diagnostic House for consultants. The creation of a new Oncology
Centre linked to the main clinic site is also planned.
Extensive consultation with the hospital's clinical staff gives
emphasis to the delivery of patient-focused care. The quality and
feel of the existing London Clinic Consulting House have been combined
with the latest technology to create a classic interior with reference
to clearly modern design.
3-5 Devonshire Place will consist of 26 consulting suites or, 'medical
chambers' for groups of doctors with complementary areas of
expertise within the same clinical speciality. These will include
gynaecology, urology, endocrinology, orthopaedic, cardiology and plastic
and reconstructive surgery. There will also be x-ray, ultrasound pharmacy
and pathology departments located on site to provide diagnostic and
other clinical support to the consulting practices. A broad range
of outpatient facilities will provide patients with a seamless one-stop
service.
The refined detailing of the interiors compliments the Georgian style
façade to Devonshire Place. Colours, finishes and artwork have
been carefully chosen throughout the building to respond to patients'
well-being and to create a calm, familiar and reassuring environment.
New glazed roofs bring natural daylight to the heart of the building
and existing external lightwells have been transformed into landscaped
gardens. Within the design, care has been taken to provide wayfinding
for those unfamiliar with the building. Inclusive access is provided
and each diagnostic department has been designed as a self-contained
unit to provide privacy for patients.
