Cardiff Bay (Roath Basin)
2002-ongoing
The Welsh Development Agency (WDA) has appointed Terry Farrell and
Partners to develop a masterplan for Roath Basin in Cardiff Bay. This
spectacular site, which includes over 1.6 miles of former docks and
shoreline has been selected by the Agency to act as a major attractor
for new research and knowledge based institutions, which will act
as a new economic catalyst for the city and the region. TFP's
masterplan is focused on realizing the unparalleled opportunities
offered by the variety of naturalistic and engineering waterfronts
that the site offers.
The core of the site is designed as a network of public spaces framed
by office, laboratory and research buildings overlooking the waterfront.
The northern and southern ends of the site are designed for a mixture
of residential, retail, leisure and hotel accommodation. The masterplan,
which includes over 2m sq. ft., of mixed-use development will be implemented
over a 10-15 year period and will deliver a major new urban extension
to the attractions already completed in the Bay around Pierhead Square
and Mermaid Quays.
Major new urban spaces, waterside walks and gardens will provide the
setting for spectacular architecture and an extension to the public
domain of Cardiff Bay.
