Southampton
West Quay
2002-ongoing
Terry Farrell and Partners have been commissioned by Hammerson, working
in collaboration with Southampton City Council to prepare a masterplan
for a new town square adjacent to the historic walls of the city.
The aspiration is to create a square as the focus for community celebration,
events, markets, fairs, and a host of other group activities. The
new square provides the focus for a diverse range of leisure and
fun focused activity that frame the space. A major arena, restaurants,
cinemas, and leisure-focused shopping will create an energetic new
location in the city, as a destination and an attractive place to
live. The scheme builds on the phenomenal success of West Quay Shopping
Centre, also developed by Hammersons, which has radically repositioned
Southampton as a regional leisure and shopping destination on the
south coast.
The design builds on the fascinating history of the area as the former
quayside for the city and an historic promenade following the line
of the ancient city walls. When completed, the plan will transform
this formerly industrial suburb into a popular resort for the people
of Southampton and for the growing number of tourists and visitors.
