Punggol Station, Singapore
1998-2003

Punggol station is located in the centre of Punggol 21 which, when realised, will be a new high density town, a model housing estate for the 21st Century, including designer styled contemporary homes, with waterfront shops, restaurants and entertainment facilities. This northern-most station is one of only two above ground stations along the north-east line and is a remarkable sight to behold.

The building is a futuristic icon with sleek three–dimensional curved aluminium and stainless steel cladding creating a streamlined modern design that celebrates its significance as a principle component of the urban transportation network within this new area of Singapore.

The station enjoys the distinction of being the longest along the line, standing at 320 metres long. It is constructed over three levels with four entrances. The split concourse sits directly above the platforms and it boasts six lifts to serve its elegant structure. A unique feature of this interchange is that it has a road running through the centre of the station at ground level, which results in a stunning singular metallic gateway to Punggol . This idea is visually reinforced when viewing the station from either the north or the south as the vent shafts and cooling towers rise up and are contained within curved metallic enclosures, separating the future LRT platform and the adjoining viaduct structure.

To incorporate future infrastructure expansion, the North Shore Line tunnel box has been built below the station which, when complete, will fully realise this significant interchange linking three rail networks including the MRT, LRT and NSL to the city.

The station interior finishes are in a monochromatic palette which include polished and honed granite, metal wall panelling, stainless steel and glass which provides a perfect surrounding for the incorporation of art work of intense colours and wonderful textures in fused glass, which are especially striking against the context of the station's clean futuristic architecture.
