The Peak Tower, Hong Kong
1991-1995
This was the winning entry in a limited international competition
for a landmark building to replace the existing Peak Tower on a prominent
site in Hong Kong. It commands one of the best views in the world
and creates a backdrop to the spectacular cityscape of Hong Kong's
central district.
The building is highly visible and is intended to symbolise Hong Kong.
The form is open to many symbolic interpretations, including bowl,
boat and open hands. The solid base, open podium and floating roof
with upswept eaves also refer to traditional Chinese architecture.
The design incorporates the existing Peak tram station, with additional
retail & restaurant areas, with a 'special theme ride' located
in the podium, ending at the lowest level. Visitors move upwards by
escalator or lift to the tram station and main entrance at mid-level
and the viewing platforms and restaurants at the top, passing retail
outlets on their way.
